Chikungunya in France - Update 1

26 Jun 2025

On 25 June 2025, the French Public Health Agency reported a total of eight locally-acquired cases of chikungunya since 27 May 2025.

Cases have been reported from four different provinces in the south of the country: two cases in Occitane (Hérault and Gard); three cases in Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur (Var and Bouches-du Rhône), one case in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes (Drôme) and two cases on the island of Corisca (Corse du Sud).

Advice for Travellers

Chikungunya is an infection spread by mosquito bites and can cause a high temperature (fever) and intense pain in your joints.  Two new chikungunya vaccines have recently been licenced in the UK.

The mosquitoes which transmit chikungunya bite during the day, between dawn and dusk.  They are particularly persistent and aggressive.

If you are travelling to an area where chikungunya is present, you are potentially at risk of infection and should be aware of this infection.

If you develop a fever either during or after travelling to an affected area, you should seek medical advice as soon as possible and give details of your recent travel history.
