Hepatitis A in Mexico

An increase in the incidence of hepatitis A has been reported from Yucatan state in the Yucatan peninsula of south-east Mexico.

The National Center for Epidemiological Surveillance and Disease Control has recorded 326 cases of hepatitis A in the state since the beginning of the year (2012); this compares with 190 for the whole of 2011.

Yucatan state borders with Quintana Roo state where the popular tourist destinations of Cancun, Cozumel and the Mayan Riviera are located.

Advice for Travellers

Hepatitis A vaccine is usually recommended for all travellers to Mexico; disease prevalence is considered moderate to high in this country. Travellers should also maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and food and water safety.
