Cholera in Dominican Republic

An outbreak of cholera has been reported on by the media. The outbreak is reported in Espaillat Province, in the north of the country. The worst affected area are: Las Amapolas, La Bandada, Guaucí Abajo, Paso de Moca, La Ermita, Cuero Duro and other communities at San Victor municipal district and Moca municipality.

A total of 35 cases have been confirmed out of more than 100 suspected cases. Thirty two cases remain in a critical condition in hospital.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is considered a low risk for travellers to Dominican Republic who have access to safe drinking water and who maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and food safety.

Cholera vaccine is available for those mixing closely with the local population who cannot ensure safe water/food and a good standard of personal hygiene.
