Dengue Fever in Mexico

Dengue fever is an ongoing problem in Mexico. During the first 5 weeks of 2013, 1061 cases were reported and of those, 355 were dengue haemorrhagic fever cases. The states most affected include: Guerrero (209 cases), Veracruz (118 cases), Michoacan (106 cases), Yucatan (92 cases) y Quintana Roo (89 cases), Yucatan peninsula 187 cases.
Advice for Travellers
Mexico is a popular tourist destination and travellers should be aware of the risk of dengue fever. Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
