30 Apr 2013

The media has reported on the measles situation in Punjab, east Pakistan. The outbreak is ongoing and more than 10 243 measles cases have been recorded in the last five months; in one 24 hour period last week, 79 new cases were reported. Around 61 measles deaths have been recorded, most occurred in Lahore, Gujranwala, Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Kasur.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
