Dengue Fever in India

Dengue fever is being reported from several areas of India. As of 6 June 2013, Karnataka state in the southwest of the country reported 3882 suspected cases of dengue fever. Of those, 984 have been confirmed and two cases have been fatal. Cases are increasing in the state.

In the neighbouring state of Kerala in the far south of India, two districts are reporting dengue fever cases. As of 3 June 2013, Pathanamthitta district has recorded 410 suspected cases, of which 189 have been confirmed. Dengue fever cases are increasing in Kottayam district where at least 816 have been recorded.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers should be aware of the risk of dengue fever. Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
