Typhoid Fever in Nepal

The media has reported on an outbreak of typhoid fever in Rukum district, a mountainous area in Rapti zone, Mid-Western region, located 280km from Kathmandu. Most cases have occurred in Bhalakcha, Saakha, Chaukhabang, Bafikot and Syalapakha.
Contamination of drinking water sources due to the monsoon rains and change in the weather pattern have been blamed for the spread of the disease.
Advice for Travellers
Nepal is a popular tourist destination and typhoid vaccine is usually recommended for all travellers. Travellers should also maintain a high standard of food, water and personal hygiene whilst in Nepal.
