Dengue Fever in Brazil

Dengue fever cases have been reported from several states of Brazil:
- As of 22 February 2014, 64 cases have been reported in Fortaleza, Ceara state in the northeast of the country.
- Matto Grosso state in the central west of the country, has recorded 2463 cases. The worst affected municipalities include: Cuiaba (211 cases), Rondonopolis (157), Sinop (787) and Varzea Grande (99 cases).
- Maringa in Parana state, southern Brazil, has recorded 2132 suspected cases. Of those, 506 have been confirmed as dengue virus infection.
- Sao Paulo state in the southeast of the country has reported outbreaks in three municipalities: Americana (277 cases), Votuporanga (164) and Santa Barbara d'Oeste (363 cases)
Advice for Travellers
Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
