Viral Meningitis in Georgia (Update)

The media has reported on the outbreak of viral meningitis in Georgia. The number of cases has increased rapidly and now stands at 306. Cases are reported throughtout the country; the worst affected area is Tbilisi with 169 cases followed by Kutaisi (51), Adjara (18), Rustavi (11). Isolateted cases have been reported in a number of cities and towns across Georgia.

The Ministry of Health has advised parents and staff at schools to take additional hygiene measures to protect the children; recommmending strict personal hygiene, frequent hand washing and thorough cleaning of dining areas. Schools are scheduled to reopen on 27 May 2014, following the implementation of additional sanitary measures.

There is no vaccine available against viral meningitis. The main preventive measure is to maintain a good standard of hygiene.
