Cholera in South Sudan (Update)
29 May 2014
The cholera outbreak in the capital Juba continues to spread. More than 670 individuals have sought treatment for cholera symptoms and 23 cholera deaths have been recorded.
Cholera has been confirmed in one case in a camp for displaced persons in Juba. Health officials are extremely concerned about the potential for rapid spread among the inhabitants of the camp. Steps have been taken to ensure that the water that is supplied to the camp in chlorinated.
Additional cholera treatment centres are being set up in Juba and treatment of the water sources suspected to be the cause of the outbreak is underway.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
