Flooding in Bangladesh

Heavy rain in August 2014, has caused the water level of the rivers Brahmaputra, Ganges and Meghna to rise above danger levels and cause flooding in the north and north-eastern of Bangladesh. Bhola, a coastal district on the south central part of the country is also experiencing tidal flooding.
An estimated 700 000 individuals have been marooned in the jollowing districts: Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Sirajganj, Bogra, Rangpur, Jamalpur, Nilphamari, Bhola and Sherpur. Around 816 459 individuals have been affected by the flooding. The immediate needs of those affected are food and safe drinking water. Most have taken shelter on the embankments (around 20 000 people), high grounds, roads and flood shelter. Significant damage to livelihoods, crops, shelter, water and sanitation, roads, embankments and health facilities is being reported.
