Hepatitis A in Slovakia
15 Oct 2014
Over the past few weeks, an outbreak of hepatitis A has been ongoing in southern Slovakia. The outbreak is confined to the districts of Zlaté Moravce and Levice at present and the majority of cases have been identified among the Roma community in Zlaté Moravce. At least 50 cases have been reported and most of those affected are living in poor conditions without access to adequate water supply and sanitation.
An immunisation campaign is planned for the affected areas; targeting around 1000 individuals at risk.
Advice for Travellers
Hepatitis A vaccine is not usually advised for Slovakia but limited to selective use for those at highest risk. Following risk assessment the vaccine may be advised during an outbreak situation for those visiting the affected areas.
Travellers should also maintain a high standard of food safety and personal hygiene.
