Dengue Fever and Chikungunya in Turks and Caicos Islands (Update)

21 Oct 2014

The Health Department for Turks and Caicos Islands has released official figures relating to dengue and chikungunya virus infections occurring in the islands. As of 10 October 2014, 154 cases of dengue fever have been confirmed, with a further 335 suspected cases reported. Seventeen cases of chikungunya virus infection have been confirmed, with a further 109 suspected cases reported. The increase in mosquito-borne infections may be related to increased mosquito breeding sites following Tropical Storm Cristobal and pooling of flood water.

Health department activities include: public health education, eradication of mosquito breeding sites, fogging, supply of mosquito repellents and nets, plus surveillance and diagnosis of dengue and chikungunya virus infections.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
