Cholera in Nigeria
04 Nov 2014
Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has reopened the cholera treatment centre in the Borno State Hospital following a new outbreak in the region.
A total of 4500 cases and 70 cholera related deaths have been recorded in less than one month in Borno State's capital, Maiduguri. MSF took the decision to re-open the cholera treatment centre and increase the number of beds to 150.
MSF staff are working with the Ministry of Health to provide care for those most in need; 1912 affected individuals have already received treatment.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
