Cholera in Malawi

16 Feb 2015

The Ministry of Health in Malawi has reported a small number of cholera cases following the recent severe flooding in the country. Six cases were reported in Nsanje close to camps for individuals displaced by the flooding. Those affected attended Ndamera and Rurwe health centres for treatment; 3 have been discharged and 3 continue with treatment.

The Ministry of Health is monitoring the situation.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers.

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
