Typhoid Fever in Uganda (Update)

The Ministry of Health for Uganda and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) have issued a further Press Statement on the outbreak of typhoid fever in Kampala and neighbouring districts, Wakiso and Mukono.

As of 23 February 2015, a total of 513 suspected cases have been identified. Kisenyi Health Center IV which is the designated treatment center, has thus far treated 403 cases.

The source of the outbreak is thought to be a contaminated drinking water supply around the affected areas. Investigations are ongoing to locate the exact source of infection.

Advice for Travellers

Typhoid vaccine is usually recommended for all travellers to Uganda. Travellers should also maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and safe food and water whilst in Uganda.
