Dengue Fever in Cuba

The media has reported on an outbreak of dengue fever in Cuba; the outbreak has not been declared officially. The provincial authorities have cancelled the 2015 carnival in the city of Holguin which was scheduled to take place between 20-23 August in the northeast of the country.

The authorities have postponed the carnival until until the hygienic and epidemiological conditions in the city have improved. There is no official report of number of cases in this news item.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
