Dengue Fever in Pakistan

The media has reported on dengue fever in Sindh province in the southeast of Pakistan. Cases of dengue fever are being reported across the province, however, the vast majority of cases have been identified in the city of Karachi.

Since the beginning of 2015, a total of 2896 cases of dengue fever have been reported, of those, 2829 were in Karachi. Between 26 Oct-1 Nov 2015, 190 cases were reported in Sindh province; 189 of those cases were in the city of Karachi, with 2 in Hyderabad and one in Mirpurkhas.

Since January 2015, cases have also been reported in: Hyderabad (26), Larkana (9), Mirpurkhas (8), Umerkot (7), Shaheed Benazirabad (4), Thatta, Sukkur and Ghotki (3) each, Sanghar (2) and Shikarpur and Jacobabad one each.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
