Yellow Fever in Angola (Update)

The media have reported on the ongoing outbreak of yellow fever in Angola. Since the outbreak was first reported in December 2015, a total of 118 deaths have been reported. The majority of cases (434) have been reported in the province of Luanda where 82 deaths have been recorded. The next worst affected province is Huambo with 55 cases and 18 deaths, followed by Huila with 49 cases and 12 deaths.
Other affected provinces include Bie, Benguela, Cunene, Cabinda, Malange, Kwanza Sul, Uige, Zaire and Kwanza Norte.
The first immunization campaign started in Luanda On 3 February 2016, and around 1.9 million individuals have been vaccinated against yellow fever.
Advice for Travellers
There is a risk of yellow fever and vaccination is advised for travellers (unless contraindicated). Travellers should also take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from all travellers over 9 months of age entering Angola.
