Cholera in Dominican Republic

The media has reported on an outbreak of cholera in Santiago province, northern Domincan Republic. A total of 64 suspected cases have been identified and of those, 4 have been confirmed as cholera. Those affected were located in the district of La Canela and the sectors of Gurabo and Cienfuegos in Santiago province.
Advice for Travellers
Cholera is a low risk for most travellers and vaccination against cholera is not necessary for the majority of those visiting Domincan Republic. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera.
