Changes to the Cambodia, China and Vietnam Malaria Maps
18 May 2016
The malaria advice for Cambodia, China and Vietnam has recently been updated. These countries were considered by the Scottish Malaria Advisory Group (SMAG) after extensive research was undertaken.
In China, the risk of malaria is now lower and antimalarial tablets are no longer advised for any travellers, although advice on bite avoidance and prompt diagnosis and treatment is still essential.
In Vietnam the risk is also reduced and antimalarials tablets are recommended only for certain groups of travellers in specified areas. The specified areas on the Vietnam map are indicated with ‘hatching’. There is a low to no risk in many of the areas popular with tourists.
In Cambodia there remains a significant malaria risk in the north east of the country where antimalarial tablets should be taken. Antimalarials are advised for certain groups of travellers in other large areas of the country (hatched on the map), and there is a low to no risk in many of the areas popular with tourists.
