Changes to Laos and Myanmar Malaria Maps and Advice
30 Aug 2016
The malaria advice and maps for Laos and Myanmar have recently been updated. These countries were considered by the Scottish Malaria Advisory Group (SMAG) after an extensive trawl of the available data was undertaken.
In Laos, the risk is reduced in some areas such that antimalarial chemoprophylaxis is no longer advised for any travellers, although advice on bite avoidance and prompt diagnosis and treatment is still essential. In other areas chemoprophylaxis may be advised for certain groups of travellers based on risk assessment; in the south, risk remains significant and chemoprophylaxis is recommended.
In Myanmar risk is reduced in some areas where antimalarials are recommended only for certain groups of travellers based on risk assessment. Risk remains significant in other areas where chemoprophylaxis is still advised.
