Japanese Encephalitis in China (Hong Kong)

The Centre for Health Protection in Hong Kong has reported two cases of locally acquired Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in 2017: both from June. The first case was reported on 9 June 2017 while a second, who presented with symptoms on 18 June 2017 was diagnosed after being admitted to hospital on 28 June.

Health and environmental authorities are working to assess the situation and prevent further infection.

Advice for Travellers

Japanese encephalitis vaccine is recommended for certain travellers considered to be at risk; particularly during the high risk season. Travellers should also take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
