Rabies in Malaysia (Sarawak)
03 Jul 2017
Three cases of rabies have been reported in the Serian Division of Sarawak. Two of the cases reported being bitten by a dog in the weeks prior to developing symptoms.
Advice for Travelles
In the UK, Malaysia is considered a high risk destination for rabies mainly due to a lack of reported surveillance data and close proximity to other high risk countries.
Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk. Travellers to Malaysia should avoid all contact with animals and dogs in particular. Immediate first aid and wound care of any animal bite is very important. The incident should be reported promptly and assessed carefully.
