Malaria in South Africa (Update 1)

15 Mar 2018

Fitfortravel is advised by colleagues overseas that South Africa continues to see cases of malaria in Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces.

Advice to travellers

While the malaria risk to travellers remains generally low, travellers are strongly advised to practice rigorous mosquito bite avoidance at all times throughout Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces, especially in low-lying areas.

However, the far north east of South Africa, where the Kruger National Park is situated, is a high risk area for malaria. Bite avoidance and antimalarial chemoprophylaxis are advised for this area.

Travellers who have a fever during or on return from travel to South Africa should consider the possibility of malaria seek prompt medical attention.
