Tick-borne Encephalitis in Switzerland

Media sources reportedthere has been a significant increase in cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) this year (2018). The Federal Office of Public Health reported 150 cases so far this year (2018). In June alone, 73 cases were recorded.

Advice for Travellers

Tick-borne encephalitis is widespread in rural areas of Switzerland. All travellers should avoid tick bites e.g. by protecting the skin with clothing, tucking long trousers into socks, insect repellents and keeping to designated pathways. Raw milk products should also be avoided.

Travellers should consider being vaccinated against TBE if they are risk of tick bites when working, walking or camping in endemic areas. The vaccine available in the UK is called TicoVac and TicoVac Junior for children.
