Malaria epidemic in Burundi

The World Health Organization has reported that transmisson of malaria in Burundi is greater than expected and has reached epidemic proprotions with just under 6 million cases of malaria being reported between 2 December 2018 and 21 July 2019 across the country; there have been 1801 malaria-associated deaths in the same period.
Advice for Travellers
At this time malaria prevention advice for travellers to Burundi is unchanged: the entire country is a high risk area and antimalarial chemoprophylaxis is advised.
The importance of following existing guidance including avoidance of mosquito bites at all times is emphasized.
