11 Sep 2020

On 1 June 2020, an outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) was reported in Mbandaka, Équateur Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reports as of 8 September 2020 there have been 113 cases including 48 deaths. Cases have occurred in twelve  health zones: Bikoro (30), Bolenge (1), Bolomba (13), Bomongo (1), Iboko (4), Ingende (12), Lilanga Bobangi (6), Lolanga Mampoko (5), Lotumbe (11), Mbandaka (26), Monieka (2) and Wangata (2).

A vaccination campaign began on 5 June 2020, with 27 303 people being vaccinated. The current event is considered to be a spill-over event separate from the outbreak in the east of the country that was declared over on 25 June 2020.

Advice to travellers

When Ebola outbreaks occur, generally the risk of travellers becoming infected or developing Ebola virus disease is extremely low.

If you return from an Ebola outbreak area you should seek rapid medical attention if you develop flu-like symptoms (such as fever, headache, diarrhoea or general malaise) within 21 days after return. You should call NHS24 (Scotland) or NHS111 (England and Wales) or contact your GP by telephone. While Ebola virus disease is unlikely, you should mention any potential exposure to the virus including dates and itinerary of travel.
