Malaria in India: Mizoram state

Media quoting the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme have reported over 12,290 malaria cases (including 5 deaths) in the northeastern state of Mizoram, India between January 2024 and July 2024. Most malaria cases have been reported from Lawngtlai, Lunglei, Mamit and Siaha districts. All of the deaths have occurred in Lawngtlai.
Advice for Travellers
Malaria is a potentially serious infection that is transmitted to humans by mosquito bites. There is a high risk of malaria in Mizoaram.
If you are travelling to Mizoram, you should:
- understand your risk of malaria
- know how to protect yourself against mosquito bites at all times of the day and night during your trip. This will also help prevent dengue and chikungunya infections which are also spread by mosquito bites and are present in Mizoram state.
- make an appointment with a travel health professional because tablets to prevent malaria are advised for all travellers to Mizoram.
If you develop a high temperature (fever) and/or flu-like symptoms during or after your trip, you should always seek medical advice as soon as possible and tell the doctor about your recent travel history, including that you have travelled to a region where malaria is a risk.
