WHO certifies Egypt as malaria-free
21 Oct 2024
The World Health Organization (WHO) certified Egypt as malaria-free on 20 October 2024.
Egypt is the third country in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region to be certified as free of malaria.
Malaria elimination certification is granted by WHO when a country has:
- shown that malaria transmission has been interrupted nationwide for at least three consecutive years
- demonstrated the capacity to prevent the re-establishment of malaria transmission
Malaria is a serious parasite infection that is transmitted by the bite of female mosquitoes. Malaria prevention measures are not required for travellers to Egypt, although insect bites should still be avoided as other insect-borne infections may be present.
See the Malaria page for further information on the disease.
