Hepatitis E Virus in Niger

As of 12 April 2017, WHO reported
a Hepatitis E outbreak in the Diffa region which is located in the east of the country. A total of 72 cases of acute jaundice syndrome, with 17 deaths (all pregnant women) have been reported.
Advice to travellers
The highest risk of infection is present for those travelling to regions with poor sanitation and hygiene. To prevent infection travellers should be advised to:
- Practice safe food and water hygiene.
- Avoid raw/undercooked pork/game products and shellfish.
No vaccine is available for use in the UK.
